Seventh Grade Enriched Language Arts

2011-2012 School Year

August 26, 2011

Welcome to my 7th grade parents and students!  I thought of all of you over the summer and was so happy to see the students again.  By the way, I hope you will all attend 7th grade Open House next month.  I would really enjoy meeting you.  For 7th Open House, you will follow your child's daily schedule and get to meet all of the his/her teachers.

We have had a wonderful first-week-of-school and started out with a "Who Am I" poem.  The students had to think in abstract, poetic, and creative ways and they did a beautiful job.  You will receive these poems at Open House.

I am pretty sure our first literature selection will be The Time Machine by H.G. Wells.  It is exciting and challenging and I hope the student will learn much from it.  Our first big writing project will be based on this story.

This will be followed by a non-fiction work entitled The Double Helix by James Watson.  We will be reading only selected chapters, but I think it will be a good opportunity to learn about more technical reading.  It is also a great suspense story and recounts one of the most exciting chapters in science research and discovery.

We will again be learning a "batch" of SAT words.  In addition, we will devote a good portion of time to Greek and Latin word roots to enhance vocabulary acquisition.

This website is a work-in-progress, so check it frequently for changes and additions.  Eventually I will post the new SAT words, recommended websites, and some recommended books.

As last year, we will be diligent is writing down homework assignments in the planners.  This is your best source for the work your child should be doing at home.
