Welcome to Mrs. Smoral's Class

Classroom Procedures

2011 - 2012

Room A2

    • Please call the attendance line if your child will be absent.  The school policy on make up work is that it will be collected and sent home with the child when they return to school. If I am given prior notice, or if the absence will be for an extended period of time, I may be able to send the work home prior to your child's return to school. A large amount of our classroom work is hands-on in nature and cannot be sent home
    • Snack: Your child will be given a snack time each morning. Please be sure that this snack is nutritious. Fruit, vegetables, pretzels, and crackers are excellent choices.

    • Your child may celebrate his/her birthday at school.  Birthday celebrations should take no more than 15 minutes to distribute and to eat.  You may bring your child's treat or leave the treat in the school office.  Birthday celebrations would be best from 3:15PM - 3:30PM on Monday through Thursday and on Friday from 3:00PM to 3:15PM.  Summer birthdays may be celebrated in the month of May and June.  Let me know the day you choose for this celebration.
    • If your child forgets his/her lunch, please drop the lunch off at school office before 12:00PM.
    • A full lunch is $2.40.  Milk is $.50.  Cash will not be accepted in the lunch line.  Please refer to the web page www.hudson.edu under the Food Service Link for daily menu and online accounting services.  Your child will be able to charge a lunch if he/she runs out of money or forgets his/her money.  You will be notified of this charge.
    • Your child should bring home his/her yellow take home folder every night.  Please have your child go through the folder with you.  Your child knows which papers need to stay at home and which papers need to be brought back to school.
    • Each Monday your child will bring home a new homework calendar.  Your child should check off the work as he/she completes the assignments.  It is best to not bring your child's homework to school if he/she forgets the assignment.  This teaches responsibility.
    • Each Friday your child will bring home his/her "Letter Home".  Please have your child read his/her letter to you.  Your child should have a Learning Experiences sheet in the back of the notebook.  This will help you to ask more questions about his/her week in school.  Please write your child a note on the back of his/her Letter Home.  Your child will have the chance to share your response with the class on Monday.
    • Each Friday your child will bring home his/her Poetry Notebook.  Your child is looking for "Lucky Listeners" to read to on the weekend.  All Lucky Listeners should sign the book and if they would like, write a comment.  Reading familiar text will increase fluency.
    • Each Friday your child will bring home a manila folder with his/her work for the week.  Please spend time reviewing your child's work.  Please sign the folder.  Keep all the work at home.  The folder should be returned on Monday.
    • Each child will have the chance to be "Star of the Week".  Your child will be notified a week ahead of time if he/she is the star student.  Your child will be given a poster to complete.  Your child may also bring in anything to share during his/her special week.
    • Your child will receive a monthly reading chart.  Your child should read at home at least 10 minutes five nights a week or 50 minutes a week.  This may be independent reading, reading with a parent or another adult, or the parent reading to the child.
    • Your child will be learning strategies to help him/her master the basic math facts.  Periodically information will come home as to the math fact strategy being taught.  Flashcards will come home after a math fact strategy has been taught and practiced in school.  Your child should practice these facts 5 to 10 minutes at least four nights a week.
    • If you need to pick up your child early, please go to the office and the secretary will call for your child.  Your child may not leave the classroom until he/she is called for from the office.
    • If your child misses his/her bus, I will call you to come and pick up your child.
    • If your child has a change in his/her normal dismissal procedure, please send a note with your child.
    • Book Orders: Your child will bring home optional book order forms each month.  If you choose to place an order please write a check payable to Scholastic Books
    • Classroom Parties: We have four parties this year. They are the Fall party, the December Holiday Party, the Valentine's Day party.  There will also be an end of the year carnival at Ellsworth Hill for the second graders.  A note will go home asking for a $5 donation to help with the cost of the parties.  Room parents will be organizing the parties.
    • Cathy Leighton is our school guidance counselor. She can be reached by calling the main office. She is available to meet with parents and with students.
    • Weekly bulletins are emailed to parents before the start of a new school week.
    • Please refer to Room A2's Handbook, given out at Open House, for more details on classroom procedures.

If you have any questions, please call the Ellsworth Hill office(330-653-1236) or email me at Smoralr@hudson.edu.  I check my email before and after school.
