Welcome to Social Studies
"Our children should learn the general framework of their government and then they should know where they come in contact with the government, where it touches their daily lives and where their influence is exerted on the government. It must not be a distant thing, someone else's business, but they must see how every cog in the wheel of a democracy is important and bears its share of responsibility for the smooth running of the entire machine." Eleanor Roosevelt
The primary purpose of the kindergarten through high school social studies program is to help students understand, through the study of the past and present, what it means to be a life-long responsible participant in society. Students will develop the ability to make informed and reasoned decisions for the public good as citizens of a diverse, democratic society in an interdependent world of finite resources.
Social Studies is a vital part of the curriculum as it embraces the context within which future adults will respond to the changing global world as they apply the knowledge and skills gained from the rest of their school experiences.
Social Studies utilizes the integrated study of history, people in societies, geography, economics, government and citizenship rights and responsibilities through a framework of skills and methodologies to contribute to real-life learning opportunities. The social studies program must actively engage learners in situations that call upon their knowledge, require them to use their skills and ask them to respond according to democratic principles.
