Hudson City Schools

Reading Assessment

The goal of the Hudson City Schools' reading instruction is to improve the reading achievement of all students. To achieve that goal, the district has implemented an on-going assessment program. Teachers assess to determine student needs, teach, and assess again to determine progress toward grade level indicators.

DIBELS - Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy Skills (Grades K-4)

The DIBELS is given three times during the school year: fall, winter, spring.

The DIBELS is an assessment of a student's progress toward nationally normed benchmarks in phonemic awareness and reading fluency. While this is a quick assessment, it is effective in guiding teacher instruction to help students meet the established benchmarks.

At kindergarten, students are assessed in initial sound fluency, letter naming fluency, phoneme segmentation fluency and nonsense word fluency.

In first grade, students are assessed in phoneme segmentation fluency, nonsense word fluency and oral reading fluency.

During the second grade, students are assessed in nonsense word fluency and oral reading fluency. In third and fourth grade students are assessed only in oral reading fluency.

    DIBELS Oral Reading Fluency Benchmarks

DRA - Developmental Reading Assessment (K-3)

The DRA is administered at least twice each year. The assessment is an opportunity for students to read text independently at their reading level. The student then completes a one-on-one conference with the teacher in which the student must retell the story and read aloud a passage from the text. Our goal is to help all children read with great accuracy and fluency and to understand well what they have read.

    DRA Benchmark Levels

   Hudson Reading Assessment (Grades 4-8)

Each grade level has developed reading assessments based on the standards for the grade. The Hudson reading assessments are given in the fall, winter and spring. Over the course of the school year, students should show progress toward the grade-level indicators.
