Mrs. Nederostek's Fifth Grade Class

Welcome to the 2011 -2012 school year. Your team teachers are Mrs. Hoenie, Mrs. Koneval, Mrs. Nederostek, Mrs.Skotko, and Mrs. VanderSchie.  Mrs. Hoenie teaches Language Arts.  Mrs. Koneval teaches Language Arts and math to select students while offering support in science and social studies.  Mrs. Nederostek teaches Language Arts.  Mrs. Skotko teaches math.  Mrs. VanderSchie teaches science and social studies.

Mrs. Nederostek's Language Arts students will begin each week with vocabulary study. Weekly vocabulary study will alternate between the study of Greek and Latin word derivations and ability appropriate vocabulary words from the book Word Explorer. Tests will be given on Friday of each week.   Vocabulary study related to the stories we read will also be part of our program and the testing of these words will be imbedded in the evaluations of focused reading skills during that study.

Students will also be engaged in an English grammar and punctuation review each day with a test on these related skills every two weeks.  The study of spelling will occur every week with tests on Fridays.

A number of novels will be read and studied this year with in-class instruction, while some will be read independently as the students complete related work. The novels will introduce the students to several genres in fiction and also nonfiction works. All time "reading" outside of school is eligible for use as "independent reading" hours. This "reading" can be related to reading for pleasure or reading to complete assignments. The Independent Reading Program is explained on the student form sent home in August.  Along with developing proficiency with the reading standards by use of novels, we will also be practicing skills using the Language Arts Program entitled Literacy by Design and Critical Reading.  In writing we will focus on four writing topics:  narrative, business letter, poetry response, and an expository essay (cause/effect or compare/contrast).

Topics to be studied in science include Consumer Science; Nature of Matter; Transfer of Energy - Light, Sound, and Heat; Solar System; and Ecosystems.  Long-term assignments may be given throughout the year.

In social studies the students in both classes will learn about the geography of the United States, the regions of our country, our national form of government/citizenship, immigration patterns, economics and historical issues.   Long-term assignments may be given throughout the year.

In math this year we will be working on many different concepts and problem solving strategies. Students are expected to know and master all their math facts. Your child will have a math journal that will have daily work and a review of math concepts taught. It is important that your child bring this journal home daily and use this as a study guide. Each student will be given a math enrichment packet each month and a DynaMath magazine.  These will be used to help motivate and enrich students math skills. The student's will also have a Math at Hand book to be used for reference or additional support.

We have an interesting year planned for the students and look forward to continuing the development of their skills in all subjects so they will be well prepared to continue their educational growth in sixth grade.
