Greetings! What a pleasure and privilege it is to have the opportunity to work with our second grade students again this year. To have the opportunity to build upon the skills we learned last year with the same teacher and students is a very exciting and enjoyable journey for all of us.
We have been actively learning music in many different ways this year: singing, playing instruments, learning singing games from different cultures, listening to quality music from around the world, and learning to read and write music notes. My primary goal with the students, though, is not that they become experts in the musical concepts that we learn. Rather, my primary goals are two-fold: 1) Students will be actively engaged in the musical experience so much that they learn, and more importantly, 2) Because of their positive experience and belief in their own musical competence, they develop an innate desire to also engage in musical experiences outside of the Ellsworth Hill music room.
As partners in education, please encourage your childs musical development at home by allowing them to listen to quality music at home and in the car, express their happy moods through song (though I realize they can get loud and off-key when they are feeling especially happy!), and allowing these students to explore music books at home or other places where you may encounter music books (such as a hymnal at church). Further, there are wonderful childrens concerts throughout the Cleveland/Akron area during the year. The students are at a perfect age to begin attending these concerts.
I believe that every child can learn anything they desire, and that is my goal for our students: through an active, engaging music class, they will want to learn music and will therefore be successful in the topics and skills that we develop this year.
