At McDowell Elementary School, there are fifteen classrooms of third grade students.  McDowell  was added to the Hudson City School District in 1967 to house grades 4, 5 and 6.   In 1991, four classrooms were added on to McDowell and, in 1992, its population changed to the entire third grade, plus six classrooms of second grade.  When Ellsworth Hill was built in 2007, the second graders moved to that building and currently, McDowell houses all third graders.  McDowell averages 21-23 students per classroom, and offers a full range of curriculum.
