The Hudson City School District is served by a staff of nurses and medical assistants from Akron Children's Hospital
One of the policies impacted by Board of Education review is how nonprescribed medications are administered to students. For several years, students in grades 6-12 were permitted to obtain both Tylenol and Advil from the school clinic, supplied by the district. This practice has been discontinued. Parents may provide to the school nurse a small supply (due to space constraints in the clinics) of nonprescribed medication, in original manufacturer packaging, properly labeled with student name and dosing information, together with prior written consent and a waiver of liability, so that medication can be administered during the school day.
Additionally, other forms will need to be completed in order for students to receive prescribed medication or to receive or possibly carry an Epinephrine Autoinjector (Epi-pen), an asthma inhaler or other emergency medication. All these forms require completion by parent/guardian and physician. All health forms are currently available at the building clinics. Any questions regarding medications taken at school can be directed to the school nurse or medical assistant at the child's school.
Each fall, parents complete an Emergency Medical Authorization Form as well as an Emergency Information Card. This supplies the medical services staff and key school personnel with phone numbers of local people to contact in case a student becomes ill at school. Parents are the first to be contacted in all situations. The alternate numbers are used only after attempts to reach parents have failed.
Parents who have a student with a health problem or concern are encouraged to contact the school nurse or medical assistant at the child's school. The medical services staff can work with school personnel and help meet the needs of the student. All health matters are handled confidentially.
