AN INTRODUCTION
Hudson Middle School currently has around 1200 students in grades six, seven and eight. In order to address the large enrollment, the school has been divided into four learning communities, creating a "school within a school" atmosphere. Blue, Red, Green and Purple Communities are academically balanced and consist of students and teachers in each grade. Students will remain in the same community for grades six and seven. For eighth grade, students will be redistributed among the four communities, in order to provide them the opportunity to meet additional students in preparation for the transition to high school.
SPACE
The Hudson Middle School provides a smooth learning transition between elementary school and high school. A focus is to give young adolescents the SPACE they need to grow and develop. SPACE is made up of the following important needs for an adolescent learner: social activities, physical activities, academics, climate and emotional support.
Social Activities
School dances sponsored by C.A.R.E., the eighth grade Lock-In, Student Council/4-Kids Program, and Student Activity Week.
Physical Activities
Intramurals, interscholastic athletics, field days, physical education classes, Ski Club and cheerleading.
Academics
A high quality curriculum including Jazz Band, Ohio Math League, national French and Spanish tests, an after-school math tutoring program, and REACH (Resources for Extending Academic and Creative Horizons) mini-units. Computer Technology with Internet access is available for students and staff throughout the Middle School.
Climate
Students of the Month, Student to Student, Spring Field Days, Character Recognition, field trips, SHOP (Students Helping Other People), and Spirit Week.
Emotional Support
Guidance counseling services, Lunch Bunch, Mental Health Awareness Week, student assistance services, psychological testing and counseling, and alcohol and other drug abuse prevention and intervention.
CORE CURRICULUM
Each community offers a balanced core curriculum in language arts, mathematics science, and social studies. Unified arts for each grade level and 8th grade world language courses (for students who are recommended) also are included in the core curriculum. Each core period within a student's schedule is about 55 minutes in length.
Language Arts
Language Arts instruction at Hudson Middle School focuses on extending student literacy through a balance of reading, writing, speaking and listening. Students are asked to read, think, analyze, synthesize, and communicate effectively using a variety of materials. Study skills, note taking and outlining skills, speaking and listening strategies, test-taking strategies and organizational skills are important components of the curriculum.
Mathematics
The Mathematics curriculum is "paced," which means that a student may begin math instruction for a specific course at different grade levels. The main emphasis of the program is the promotion of problem solving and application of facts rather than computation. Integrated Math I is designed to be scheduled for most students beginning in the seventh grade. For those students who qualify, placement in Integrated Math I may begin in the sixth grade.
Science
The Science program deals with biological, physical and earth sciences (sixth grade), life science, physics and chemistry (seventh grade), and environmental science (eighth grade). It is designed to give the middle school student an overview in the areas of general science.
Social Studies
Social Studies for sixth grade students includes examination of the geopolitical region of the Eastern Hemisphere using tools of the anthropologist, economist, geographer and historian. Seventh grade students learn about man's relationship to the physical environment throughout all the regions of the world. Eighth graders study United States history, with emphasis on revolutionary America, the U. S. Constitution, the Civil War period, as well as study of the roaring 20's, the Depression 30's and the 20th Century wars.
Unified Arts
Sixth grade students are scheduled for Art, General Music, French/Spanish Exploratory World Language, and Integrated Literacy. Sixth grade teams rotate through these four nine-week courses throughout the year, so that each student receives exposure to these content areas.
Seventh grade students are scheduled for Art, Health, German/Latin Exploratory World Language, and Integrated Literacy. Seventh grade teams rotate through these four nine-week courses throughout the year, so that each student receives exposure to these content areas.
Eighth grade students are scheduled for Art Tech, Health, and Integrated Literacy. Eighth grade students rotate through these three twelve-week courses throughout the year, so that each student receives exposure to these content areas. Eighth graders who are enrolled in a world language and a music elective (band, orchestra, or choir) are exempt from unified arts in order to accommodate both courses in their schedule. World language students who are not enrolled in a music elective will take Unified Arts during one of their 41-minute encore periods.
World Language - Eighth Grade
Recommended students may elect to take a full-year world language course (French, German, or Spanish) during their 8th grade year. Due to a rigorous curriculum, we do not suggest a world language for all students at this time. Although adapted to the needs of the middle school child, it is a challenging subject. Students do not receive high school credit when taking a world language course at the middle school, although they may enroll in the second level (i.e. French II) as freshmen if they successfully complete the middle school course.
ENCORE CURRICULUM

All students, at each grade level, are scheduled for Physical Education, which is a 41-minute period scheduled for two days per week and alternate Fridays for a full year.
