Ways To Help Your Child with Math at Home

Ask Questions

  • What did you do in class?
  • Did you ask questions during class or team support?
  • Did you receive a labsheet or reference sheet?
  • Where is your work so I can understand what you are doing?
  • Where are your notes from class?
  • What does this word mean?
  • What is the question asking?  Did you answer it?
  • Did you call/email a friend for help?
  • Did you look in Math On Call?

Use Class Notes

  • Have students review notes, reference sheets and examples to help them review the methods of how to solve the problem.
  • Ask students if they have reviewed new and old material discussed in class.
  • Have students organize their binders so information is easy to locate.

Reread the Problem

  • Read the problem out loud, including directions and pay attention to bold faced words and pictures that may be important to solve the problems.

Reference Book

  • Math on Call  – This book should be at home on your student’s desk to use all year as a reference. It includes formulas, definitions, and step-by-step explanations of math concepts.

Use the Textbook

  • Mathematical Highlights – Located in the front of the book, it outlines the goals of the unit and includes questions at the bottom of the page to ask your students throughout the book.
  • Vocabulary Section – Located in the back of the book, it provides definitions and examples.
  • “Online Help” – Certain ACE Homework questions have a website and webcode listed next to the problem.  Go to www.phschool.com and type in the webcode for hints of how to solve the problem.

Opportunities for Extra Help

  • Encourage your student to ask questions during class!  If they don’t understand something, they need to ask their teacher for help before they leave for class or during study hall or team support.
  • See the teacher!  Schedule a time that is agreeable to both.
  • The Homework Connection - A free tutoring service held at the Hudson library.
