Dear 3rd and 4th graders,
This summer East Woods Library will be holding a summer reading challenge. Over the summer break, read 15 books (85 pages or longer) and record the books on the attached handout with a parent signature and on the first day of school at East Woods stop by the library for a prize. If you don’t quite make the 15 book goal don’t fret—prizes will be awarded for 5 books and 10 books as well. Look at the East Woods Library’s homepage for a list of titles that you might like to read this summer. Contact me if you have any questions at smartm@hudson.edu.

Please contact Jen Kodosky or Pat Cassell with any questions.
A FEW REMINDERS:
Please discourage the bringing of valuables to school. This frequently ends poorly for the children, as items can be broken and misplaced.
News from Hudson Nutrition Services: School meals offer students milk, fruits and vegetables, proteins and grains. They must meet strict limits on saturated fat and portion size. Starting in 2012-2013, school lunches will meet additional standards requiring: age-appropriate calorie limits, larger servings of vegetables and fruits (students must take at least one serving of produce), a wider variety of vegetables, including dark green and red/orange vegetables and legumes, fat-free or 1% milk (flavored milk must be fat-free), more whole grains and less sodium.
Fees: The Hudson City School District is offering on-line fee payment for student lunches and student fees. Registration is open and information is easily accessible on the District's web site at www.hudson.edu and on each building web page. Look for the "Manage Meal Payments and so Much More!" button. Click to register and manage your student(s) account(s). If you need assistance with registration, please call MyPaymentsPlus Customer Service at 1-877-237-0946.
DROPPING OFF/PICKING UP STUDENTS
Uninterrupted instruction time is very important for your child and his/her classroom. When dropping off your child and signing him/her in at the office, we encourage the child to walk to his/her classroom alone. When picking up your child, after signing them out, please wait in the office or front hallway for your child to meet you. Thank you for your cooperation and understanding.
2-HOUR DELAYED START TIME
McDowell's start time: 10:55 AM; End time: 3:40PM
Hudson Schools has the option of delaying the start of school by two hours rather than lose an entire instructional day due to bad weather and road conditions. The District will use multiple resources to announce the day, including the Alert Now phone system. If a two-hour delay is called, school start times and bus pick up times begin two hours later than normal. If a two-hour delay is called, it is important to have alternative plans in place for childcare, particularly, since there is always the possibility that school may be canceled for the rest of the day if weather or road conditions do not improve. A second Alert Now call may take place within 60-90 minutes after the initial announcement for a two-hour delay should school be can celled for the day. HCER before school childcare, AM Kindergarten and Preschool are canceled if there is a two-hour delay.
About the 2-hour delay option: the school day starts 2 hours later than normal but ends at the regular time. Bus pick up times are adjusted accordingly. (Example: If your child is normally picked up at 7:20 a.m. for a school start of 8:00 a.m., the bus will arrive at 9:20 a.m. and school will start at 10:00 a.m.)
- · Elementary students, Full Day K-3, will be served a no-choice lunch due to limited preparation and delivery times. Typical lunches will be served at East Woods, the Middle School and High School.
- · There will be no school for Evamere AM Kindergarten and Ellsworth AM Preschool.
- · Explorer Zone, HCER before school childcare, will not be held on a 2-hour delay start day
- · The Hudson Middle School will follow its eight period per day schedule, with no block periods or FOCUS periods.
- · Please check the High School website for schedule details.
MORE IMPORTANT MCDOWELL NEWS
SCHOOL START TIME: School starts at 8:55AM. Children cannot be dropped off before 8:40AM, as there is no supervision before that time.
Parents: If your child is going to go home with a friend on the friend's bus, TWO NOTES ARE NEEDED....ONE FOR THE TEACHER AND ONE FOR THE BUS DRIVER. OR, you can go to the McDowell main web page and click on "Forms" and download the TRANSPORTATION CHANGE form. For additional bus/transportation information, call 330-653-3355.
Please do NOT rely on email or voice mail to get messages to your child's teacher or the office regarding change of plans for dismissal, pick-up times, or any other after-school activities. Often , teachers/staff are unable to check their email, could be absent, or the network could be down. THANK YOU!
TO REPORT ABSENCES: 330-653-1300
If your child is not going to be in school for ANY reason (dr. appt., overslept, ill, etc.) by 8:55AM, you MUST call the attendance line to report the absence. This phone call is NECESSARY for every day of your child's absence. If we are unable to account for your child, we will call the Safety Center to have someone check the residence. This is done in the best interest of your child. Thanks for your cooperation in this matter.
PARENT PICK-UP GUIDELINES
When picking up your child at the end of the day, please remain in the Parent-Pick-up line and pull up as appropriate. The supervisor on duty will release the children to your car as you pull up, and will not allow the children to run and meet you if you are not in front of the line. Please do not park in the school parking lot and call to your child to come to the parking lot. This procedure needs to be followed for the safety of your child. There are many cars going in and out at the end of the day and we need to insure no one gets hurt. Thank you in advance for your understanding and cooperation.
DISMISSAL INFORMATION
3:38 PM Children riding the first wave of buses are dismissed to East Woods; Parent Pick-UP dismissed; children going to after-school activities, walkers and bike-riders dismissed.
