The Pop Five

Jimmy Feeman

The Pop Five are my picks for favorite song, album, artist, movie and TV show this spring. I’m picking this pop five based on what I’m predicting to be new, upcoming and overall awesome.

My new song pick is “Young Homie” by Chris Rene, a former contestant on Fox’s “X-Factor.” All I can say is if you live by YOLO, it’s a great song to listen to. Seriously though, this song’s catchy and wow — can this guy sing. It’s just another one of those songs that puts you in a good mood when you hear it and reminds you of sunshine and beaches. Give this song a listen and share it with your friends because it’s about month old and you probably haven’t heard it yet.

My artist of the month is a guy right from Cleveland, Machine Gun Kelly. MGK has been a great local hip-hop artist for several years now, but has recently began to achieve national success and recognition. It’s really cool to be able to watch an artist grow and mature with his or her newfound fan base, and I can only hope to see MGK rocket closer to fame. You’ve probably heard his song “Wild Boy,” his first real hit, but check out his new song “Invincible.” It’s a lot like “Airplanes” by B.o.B.

The album that I’m recommending to absolutely everyone is “Some Nights” by Fun. This indie, punk band from New York City has made a quick rise to stardom with this new album, and make no mistake, it’s for good reason. The talent and creativity displayed in this album is unmistakably that of great musicians. The album has many good songs that make you want to listen to the whole thing all the way through. Given the chance, I also highly recommend going to see these guys live; the show is worth every penny. Their next show in Cleveland is at the House of Blues on Thursday, June 14.

My movie pick is definitely “The Lorax.” This Dr. Seuss movie is absolutely amazing for an animated film, and even though you may think it’s just for kids, it’s actually really interesting. The plot line held my attention throughout, which I found surprising. If you don’t have the chance to see it in theaters, rent it with your friends when it comes out for a movie night. I promise you won’t be disappointed.

My TV show pick for this month is “How I Met Your Mother.” This show reminds me of “Friends,” and I love the funny plotlines of this hilarious sitcom. Every show has a new little story about the main characters’ lives as young adults in New York and never ceases to make me laugh. New episodes air Mondays at 8 p.m. on CBS. If you’re looking for a new show to watch, I definitely recommend this one.
